I don’t know, this performance was funny because everyone was so out of character but like what were they thinking!? Did the writers sit in a room and say to each other, hey what’s the most stereotypical song we can have Santana sing about coming out? Did someone else say Katy Perry’s ‘I Kissed A Girl’ and everybody nod in agreement? Did Ian or Brad think that singing a fundamentally homophobic song was appropriate? Was it supposed to be ironic? Then did Ryan Muprhy pipe up and say, hey what’s the best way we can make this more offensive to lesbians, bisexuals and women in general? Did he then go onto suggest that all the boys should be watching them perform, jizzing in their pants? Probably. Did they decide that it was best to have Santana’s coming out happen off-screen like most other pivotal brittana moments? Did they then decide that the ultimate icing on the cake would be not giving Brittany one single line during her own storyline? Do the writers even realize that Brittany hasn’t spoken since episode 4 and we’re now going into episode 10?
That despite being brutally and publicly outed, coming out to her friends and parents, Santana nor Brittany have spoke about a single thing to each other? Why haven’t they kissed either? Why were Rachel, Kurt and Burt not mad at Finn for outing a person? Why was Brittany not mad at Finn? Surely if she got mad at Finn for calling her an idiot, then she would get mad at him for outing her and her girlfriend as a couple? Why was Finn acting like Santana’s boyfriend? Why the hell is it that every character without fail that has came into Santana’s coming out story arc has been, as a result, completely out of character? Santana included.
Honestly? I think this episode will haunt glee forever, they can try their best to retcon some of it but ultimately this episode broke glee and ruined not only one of, if not the best storylines they’ve had over the 3 seasons but it also had a negative knock-on effect on the rest of the show too. If Glee wanted to get its critical credibility back this season, the writers are going the wrong way about it, certainly by penning overtly offensive episodes that ruin entire arcs, and these marvelous actors can only do so much with what little they are given.
This has been a post.
